The First Six Months: Connor Clark

I spent Mother’s Day a million miles away from my own Mom. The good news is that I spent the afternoon with Cassandra as she celebrated her first Mother’s Day as a mother. I have had the pleasure of photographing their family from the maternity session, newborn session, and now at the six month mark. I am astounded at how much Connor has grown and what a sweet little personality that he has developing.

Seeing a person transition into parenthood is truly remarkable. There is so much anticipation, excitement, and change in their lives. It is nice to think that each of us created quite a stir in our own families when we entered the world. We have to rely on our parents to tell us what the rest of the story is, but every year in May we get to thank our mothers for all the ways they changed their lives for us.

Give Your Wedding Make-up Staying Power

Do you need wedding makeup tips? In this guest post Ryan Krasney of Blend Couture shares some suggestions on how to look flawless on your wedding day. Special thanks to Marquia Kinard for modeling for this shoot!

It’s finally your wedding day! The centerpieces are perfect; the dress is altered and ready to go. You begin to apply your make-up in the bridal suite while toasting mimosas with your bridesmaids when a brief flash of panic sets in. You think, “I have to keep this look lasting for the next 12-15 hours and haven’t the slightest idea how to do it!”If you’re on a budget, and hiring a professional make-up artist is out of the question, we’ve got the quickest and easiest ways to keep your wedding day make-up fresh and worry free for the entire day!

1. Prep your skin: Use a gentle exfoliant to free any trapped dirt, oil, or dead skin. A clean canvas is essential for an even make-up application. Follow that with a lightweight moisturizer. Try something oil-free, or gel based to help extend the wear of your make-up.

2. Start with the eyes: This is a great little trick! Most make-up artists prep the skin, and go directly to working on the eyes. This way when eye shadow residue falls under the eyes, simply wipe it clean. No redoing or fixing foundation or concealer!

3. Eye Primer: Using a primer on the eye (we love MAC’s Paintpot in ‘Painterly’) will completely alleviate any fear of creasing, and anchors the shadow for a look that will last all day and night. Waterproof Mascara/Eyeliner: Sounds obvious, but is easily overlooked. When applying mascara and eyeliner, be sure to use waterproof! We love Maybelline’s ‘Great Lash’ waterproof mascara, and MAC’s ‘Blacktrack’ gel based liquid liner. Set creamy liners with matching shadow color.

4. Flawless Foundation: To make your foundation last, a primer is a must! (Are you noticing a trend here? Primers rock!) We love NARS Pro-Prime Pore Refining primer because it’s oil-free. A great way to achieve an airbrushed look without spending hundreds on an airbrush machine is to choose a lightweight foundation and buff it into the skin with a foundation brush. Start in the center of your face and blend outward and down to the neck.

5. Conceal: We know we’re throwing off your regular every-day make-up routine here, but trust us. The order is important! Only use concealer after you’ve applied foundation. Your foundation will cover most flaws; only use concealer to cover what needs a little extra attention. Using too much product is going to make your look cakey. Dot a bit under the eyes with your finger, and camouflage blemishes using a pointy brush.

6. Setting Powder: This is crucial for staying powder… er… power. Set foundation and blush with a light dusting of a translucent powder. Take this with you for touch ups throughout the day!

7. Luscious Lips: Let’s face it; on a day where eating, drinking, and kissing will be pretty prevalent; it’s going to be difficult to find a lipstick that lasts. Matte formula lipsticks have the most staying power. Find your shade and a matching liner. Use the liner to fill in your lips. Apply lipstick on top of the liner, and blot with a tissue. Layer the look 2 or 3 times. Then add a small touch of gloss for shine. Carry the lipstick and gloss with you. Sorry ladies, there’s no magic formula.

Touch ups will be necessary. Don’t forget to carry a small bag, or appoint a bridesmaid to carry your translucent powder, concealer and lipstick/gloss with you. It’s always a good idea to have a few Q-tips on hand as well. Use them to clean up fall out under the eye, or to apply concealer to a blemish. Enjoy your beautifully long lasting look!

Holli & Ashley

I’m just smitten with this natural light photo session with Ashley & Holli. They are world travelers, sisters, and extraordinary friends. Having known them both for years, I know they share a symbiotic friendship that is rare even among sisters.

I was thrilled to introduce them to Washington, DC during their recent visit. It was the perfect opportunity to try out the lovely natural light in my studio and my set of new posing skills (thanks to Sue Bryce)! I absolutely loved making the shoot about these vivacious gals. There is nothing better than spending a few hours doing what you love with your best girls!

Bill, Meredith, Fiona, & Nathan

Spring seemed to have slipped right past us as Sunday was a glorious summer day! I arrived at the Bishop’s Garden outside the National Cathedral just after sunrise, and it was the perfect opportunity to pause and appreciate the moment. There is nothing like a quick commune with nature to up your creativity!

I left zen behind for an energetic family session with Meredith, Bill, Fiona, and Nathan. Meredith is a Foreign Service Officer, whom I met in in Haiti just after the 2010 earthquake. She was part of the relief team that came to support the embassy, and I am forever grateful to her and the others who left their families at home, flew to our sides, and worked tirelessly to help Americans and Haitians alike.  I was thrilled to find that Meredith and her family are currently in D.C. and very excited when she reached out to me to photograph her family! We had a fabulous morning of exploring, playing with creepy critters, and soaking up the rays!

LOVEPOST

As some of you know, I recently wrote a guest blog post for LOVEPOST. I had the pleasure of meeting the LOVEPOST team at the Great Bridal Expo in Alexandria. And I am so excited to add LOVEPOST to the Snappy Camera Studios preferred vendor list. Technically, LOVEPOST isn’t a vendor as their site is FREE! So what is LOVEPOST and why do you want it?!

LOVEPOST stems from a single, brilliant idea. The New York Times Weddings/Celebrations pages in the Sunday Styles section receives over 2,600 submissions every year from couples wanting to share their engagement story with the world, while only a small fraction are selected for publication each year. Gary Kleinman, LOVEPOST’s CEO, asked one question, “What about everyone else?”

That simple question led to the invention of LOVEPOST, a website designed for couples to announce their engagement, and share their unique love stories. The LOVEPOST team then took the idea a step further with its elegant and user-friendly website. Adding features that allow couples to include photos, wedding details, wedding events, gift registries and more. It’s a celebration of each couple’s love and commitment from “I will” to “I do,” in a way that’s never been done before online.

As someone who has been through the wedding process, I know that setting up a wedding website takes a lot of time. Personally, I was never really happy with the layout and template features of the site I chose. So I was thrilled to see a wedding website that was attractive, easy to set up, and free.

Setting up my LOVEPOST site literally took me 20 minutes, and it was so easy! You can manage all of your wedding events on one site (i.e., engagement story, engagement party, bachelorette party, wedding showers, rehearsal dinner, etc.); share images and event info; and apply separate privacy settings for each event. It’s a one stop shop for telling your story, from your engagement to your wedding day! To top it off, LOVEPOST’s blog provides tips on wedding coverage and planning and highlights couple stories. I would’ve loved to have had LOVEPOST as a tool and resource when I was getting married. So of course, I am happy to pass it along to all of you!

Engaged: Lindsay & Michael

Spring means cherry blossoms in Washington, and this year is the 100th year of the Cherry Blossom Festival! I photographed Michael and Lindsay’s engagement session on the first morning of peak bloom.  The thousands of cherry trees that make the Cherry Blossom Festival so wonderful ring the Jefferson Memorial. And, the Jefferson Memorial is where Michael popped the question, so it’s a place of special significance to Michael and Lindsay and the perfect place scene for telling their story!

We added a special session at Gravelly Point Park, near Reagan National Airport, just for Michael. He’s been flying airplanes since he was 12 years old, and it was wonderful to add a special something to the shoot for the resident aviator! Congrats Michael & Lindsay! The best is yet to be!

Welcome: Eliza

There is nothing more exciting that being able to tell a story from the beginning.  A newborn baby is truly at the beginning, full of hope and limitless possibilities. I love photographing newborn babies because I get the privileged first chance to write the introductory chapter in what will become a fantastic journey of many years and lots of love.

Last weekend I photographed the newly arrived Eliza and her mommy, Rachael. Rachael waited for Eliza for a very long time; she picked out the name Eliza’s name years ago, and even though she didn’t find out the sex of the baby before giving birth, she could never settle on a boy’s name. Perhaps Rachael’s subconscious told her a little girl was on the way, or perhaps a mother simply knows. Eliza is the realization of Rachael’s hopes and desires. It was truly wonderful to photograph this baby girl’s introduction to life.

Wedding Albums Are Forever

I wholeheartedly embrace the idea of wedding albums. Initially, I thought that my job was simply to provide beautiful images to my clients and their product selection was up to them. However, the longer I shoot weddings the more I realize how invaluable the wedding album truly is. This book showcases one of the best days of your life. It’s an heirloom that will be passed down from generation to generation. It’s your wedding newscast to the world: the documentary evidence of who you were as an individual, and who you became as a couple. It’s the beginning of your long love story and the definitive moment that you choose your partner and the direction of your life.

While searching for an album company, I kept thinking of the album that sits on my grandfather’s coffee table. It is something that I stop and look at almost every time I’m in his home. And this ideal of the album is what I carry with me. That book is a visual testament to a couple who met, fell in love, and made a life together. It tells a story of a life that I was not a part of but to which I am forever connected.  This is what I want to re-create for my clients and their families.

For me it comes down to three words: Indigo Album Designs.  They offer personalized options and design to showcase my clients’ personalities; quality materials that hold up against the test of time and adoration; and a beautiful, final product to showcase in your home. Putting together a photo album is like writing a love story with photographs. I am looking forward to helping you write your love story.

Newlyweds: Leah & Rodney

Rodney and Leah were married at the beautiful Chanteclaire Farm in Friendsville, MD. The venue was an eclectic elegant mix of modern and rustic, which inspired a comfortable, chic approach to the entire day.  Rodney and Leah were so exuberant that is was a delight to share in their wedding day. It was a pleasure to work with the talented Cassidy Duhon, and to capture the thrill of love throughout the day.
